- New island designation – is it just greenwash? - 26th April, 2024
- Police and Crime Commissioners – a solution or a problem? - 21st April, 2024
Entries are now closed: results will soon be announced. Ho, ho, ho! Once more you lucky Ranger readers get had the chance to win a BBC DVD for free. Our latest competition runs throughout the Christmas period. You want one of these DVDs? Of course you do. From the makers of the Walking With… series comes an exploration of Earth’s final frontier seen through the eyes of its greatest inhabitant, the sperm whale.
The Ranger, always keen on invertebrates, is delighted to learn that the climax of the series is what the rather breathless blurb calls “the ocean’s ultimate battle”, when the whale meets a giant squid. Fantastic! The Ranger is rooting for the tentacled one. If you want to know who wins, enter the competition. This time it’s even easier than before. How to enter You’ve missed your chance! It’s very similar to last time, but even easier. There are two ways to win, because as usual The Ranger has got two DVD prizes, and he doesn’t want them cluttering the place up.
Comment on this post Everybody can enter this one, because it’s as simple as putting a comment on the end of this post. See, down below, where there’s either a box to write in already or it says ‘leave a comment’ or ‘6 comments’ or something like that? Click there and enter the competition by just leaving a comment. You don’t even have to use your real name, so long as you leave your email address (which won’t be shown on the site), and you need not say anything in particular. Although it would be nice if you did. If you like, tell us what you want for Christmas, or who you think would win out of a whale and a giant squid, or something. The winner will be selected at random from all qualifying entries to this section of the competition.
Link to The Rangers Blog This one’s for you if you’ve got a blog or website of your own. Another chance to win for everyone who puts a link or post to The Ranger’s Blog on their website. That’s right, if you link, you can enter twice. We love to get links, and we’re happy to link back to good sites too. Those discerning people who’ve already got links (and those who entered our last competition) are of course welcome to entry this category too. To enter, make your link and then post a comment down below this post which must include (1) the full URL of the page with the link and (2) a couple of lines about your website (not too much now, we aren’t publishing adverts here). The whole thing should be no more than 250 words. The winner will be selected at random from all qualifying entries to this section of the competition.
Rules The competition closed at midnight on 4 January 2007. Full terms and conditions are here, and if you enter you thereby accept the terms and conditions. Results announced soon. Good luck to all our entrants!
I think it will be Squids in.
Q: How do you find how heavy a whale is?
A: Take it to a Whale Weigh Station.
Sorry, I couldn’t resist!
The Ranger responds: Har-di-har! Possibly one of the earliest jokes ever recorded – and all the better for it 🙂
I would like to see the giant squid win, but alas unless i win this wonderful prize i probably will never find out who does win. 🙂
Happy New year all!
Spot the over-achiever. Ho Ho Ho.
Hi! Please see my Myspace blog where I have posted a link to The Ranger’s Blog. I have also posted a link on my personal Bebo page but I think you have to have a Bebo account to view other Bebo-ers accounts? You can find a link to my Bebo page on my Myspace page. I’ve also put The Ranger’s Blog at the top of my list of Favourite Websites which I posted on my Bebo page.
I remember seeing Ocean Odyssey on the TV several months ago and was literally blown away by it – the best, most engaging and entrancing piece of factual TV I’ve seen in a long time! Would absolutely love to win the DVD and add it to my collection!
As a budding zoologist with a specific interest in marine biology, I look forward to studying such enigmatic creatures as the sperm whale and giant squid, whales being one of my favourite mammals.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
Keep up the good work,
Laura.
Would have to hope that Architeuthis wins! Fascinating animals. Sperm whale on the other hand, bit brutal, crude and rather endearingly ugly.
have you seen all the catkins?
anyway, hope to win a dvd to watch as our tv reception is rubbish
Whale, giant squid – can’t wait to find out who wins!
Much though I would like to see the squid win – I am sure for the sake of audience contentment that the ‘cuddly’ and sweet whale will be the winner!

Any Salps in this underwater fest?
The Ranger replies: Salps? I don’t know much about them but if it’s any recommendation, they’re a lot more closely related to you than a squid is!
