Firefox saved by Adblock Plus!

Regular readers will have noticed a rant here recently (now removed, out of modesty) about how the Firefox extension Adblock (if none of this means anything to you, skip this posting now) didn’t work properly with Flash 8 and various other moans. If you use Firefox and Adblock (and if you don’t, you really should) have you got these problems – Firefox doesn’t show flash? Flash images are blank? Adblock disables Flash images? Flash doesn’t work any more? Unexpected blank pages? If so, you’ve probably got an out-of-date Adblock version and you need to know how to cure it, because a simple upgrade won’t work.

I’m pleased to say that I’ve been shown the path to goodness via Kens Firefox Information which pointed me in the direction of both Adblock Plus and something with the snappy title of Adblock Filterset.G Updater.

To cure the problem download and install both of these in this order:

That’s all there is to it. Phew! Not so hard after all. Do let me know if they work for you too – or not.

With both these extensions installed, the pain is over and all is sunny in the house of Naturenet. The truly awesome functionality of the original Adblock is restored. Clean screens, no pesky commercial intrusions! So many ads consigned to the digital bin! Har har!! So, all credit to the open-source community which the Ranger was so roundly dissing recently. The model works, the solution is found. Peace and love, children.

All we need now is to help the newbies by making sure that extensions like this are not kept only as the preserve of those who know a bit of geekspeak. I mean, how likely is it that your dad will find and download Adblock Plus? Exactly.

  • Thanks for the heads up, this has been bugging me for DAYS now.. I ended up taking the drastic step of actually DISABLING adblock so flash would function properly, and wow… I never realized exactly how many ads there were out there anymore!
