A weird thing in a tree

Now here’s a mystery that you can puzzle over. The Ranger has puzzled long enough and failed to work it out. Set into a horse-chestnut tree at the side of a track The Ranger recently observed this object:

A strange thing in a tree
A strange thing in a tree

It was hollow, probably stainless steel, about 1.5m from the ground, and some 6cm in diameter. It appeared to have two small holes drilled in one side, perhaps for fixing things in. It was well attached to the tree which, indeed, had begun to grow around it. Suggestions, anyone? …Anyone?

How about an old-fashioned hubcap – maybe even one off a pram or suchlike – which was hung on a broken branch stub and just stayed there?
