The perils of mushrooming
The Wildlife Gardener sends this unexpected follow-up to her mushrooming exploits.
The mushrooms are not the only poisonous things in the woods – just as I was reaching for the nice fat Scarletina bolete … eek!
Yep, that’s an adder. Pretty late in the season, and obviously keen on mushrooms. Congratulations to the Wildlife Gardener for having the presence of mind to take a picture!

I have since learned that this was a female adder – dark brown zigzags on brown. A male would have been grey or buff with black zigzags. A girl’s got to grab a bit of sun while she can…
