The evenings are drawing in and we won't for much longer be able to see displays like the following, captured by Cat outside Ranger Towers a few evenings ago:
These enchanting creatures dancing and whirling around in the dusk are taking the opportunity to eat insects on the wing. Bats have a peak of activity for an hour or two after they emerge in the evening, and another just before dawn. It's probably a bit early for their traditional prey, the moths, so these chaps will be taking mosquitoes and similar small flying insects.

The thoughts and writings of The Virtual Ranger, since 1995 the host and mascot of Naturenet, the UK's most popular independent environmental website; along with interjections from his real-life alter ego, Matthew Chatfield, and others. Featuring not only Naturenet and countryside related stuff, but, as on Naturenet, plenty of other material - more or less at random - that takes The Ranger's fancy. But you can be confident that soon enough he'll be rather sarcastic.
