The Wildlife Gardener sends this unexpected follow-up to her mushrooming exploits.

The mushrooms are not the only poisonous things in the woods - just as I was
reaching for the nice fat Scarletina bolete ... eek!

Adder and mushroom

Yep, that's an adder. Pretty late in the season, and obviously keen on mushrooms. Congratulations to the Wildlife Gardener for having the presence of mind to take a picture!

I have since learned that this was a female adder - dark brown zigzags on brown. A male would have been grey or buff with black zigzags. A girl's got to grab a bit of sun while she can...
