UPDATE: Wow! The power of the internet wins again, as Habitat editor David Brear elects to continue the website he'd decided to close down following a chorus of piteous wailing from former users. David announced on his email list last night:
I've had so many emails - I'd no idea that you all loved Habitat so much (why didn't you say?)...
I decided to stop doing it because it was taking up too much time - I think I have rearranged things so that I can do it more quickly, so HABITAT IS BACK!
It's not quite the earth-shattering news of the famous user-prompted Digg u-turn on encryption but to us British wildlife web users, it's welcome news indeed. Welcome back, Habitat - long may you continue!
ORIGINAL ARTICLE:
It's with great sadness that The Ranger passes on the news that as of today long-standing wildlife news website Habitat is no longer to be updated.

Habitat editor David Brear has posted on the news page an announcement:
My apologies and thanks to all who have supported and enjoyed Habitat for the last eight years, but I shall no longer be updating it.
David Brear
Anyone with less to apologise for would be hard to imagine: Habitat has been a stalwart news round-up for many years, reliably giving inspiration, support and information to Naturenet and its readers through daily updates; simple layout and perceptive editorial input making the day's wildlife news easily digestible. So many times The Ranger has found a breaking story on Habitat first. It's a shame that this great service has come to an end: but also, it's worth celebrating what a great website Habitat was, and saying thanks to David for all his work over the years.

The thoughts and writings of The Virtual Ranger, since 1995 the host and mascot of Naturenet, the UK's most popular independent environmental website; along with interjections from his real-life alter ego, Matthew Chatfield, and others. Featuring not only Naturenet and countryside related stuff, but, as on Naturenet, plenty of other material - more or less at random - that takes The Ranger's fancy. But you can be confident that soon enough he'll be rather sarcastic.
