A shrimp on a treadmill to the tune of Benny Hill

Persisting with the Ranger’s long-standing interest in bizarre invertebrates, the latest addition to his virtual menagerie is this video, enigmatically titled “A shrimp on a treadmill to the tune of Benny Hill”:

This is one of the funniest things the Ranger has seen online for a long time. Which probably says something about the internet.

  1. It’s the result of some work into shrimp energetics – looking at how far/how long shrimps can keep going until they’re totally exhausted as a surrogate for how much energy they have to use for foraging, escape, etc, and comparing shrimps under various degrees of stress to estimate the effect on marine ecosystems of stressing factors such as pollutants, temperature, etc

  2. Yes – very funny! the most intriguing thing being whoever invented an underwater treadmill. Although I note that Japanese poodle parlours are currently offering water treadmills as canine aqua-aerobics.
An aquatic joke: There are two goldfish in a tank. One says to the other “Do you know how to drive this thing?”….
